Arts & Crafts Vendor Spotlight – Intrigue Ink

June 12, 2013 by Sweet Pea Festival

Intrigue Ink is the fantastically creative and funky screen printing business created and managed by sisters Paige and Tatum Johnson. The sisters started Intrigue Ink to fill the creative yearning each possessed – and with a little bit of good old-fashioned determination the venture was born! All designs are hand drawn, created, and printed with water-based inks by Paige and Tatum. These gals love to design and create intriguing prints for clothes, bags, and paper products for other funky fresh folks!

Paige is a native Bozemanite who enjoys drawing, reading, exercising, playing her violin, and hanging out with family, her daughter Lia especially. Naturally, Tatum is a Bozeman native as well, who is an awesome photographer, athlete, explorer, and super auntie.

Paige has a Master’s degree in Architecture from Montana State University and Tatum has a Photography degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design, but their shared passion is the creative endeavors they pursue through Intrigue Ink! …Be intrigued!Intrigue Ink

Children’s Run Promotes Fitness & Friendship

June 4, 2013 by Sweet Pea Festival

In 1992 these two cuties, Leigh Murdock and Kelly Elmore, ran in the Sweet Pea Children’s Run together.  Leigh, left, won the race!

And here they are 21 years later at a Disney World half marathon still running together and smiling ear to ear!Kelly_Leigh_Disney_2013

Promote fitness for your children by signing them up to participate in this year’s Sweet Pea Children’s Run. Tell ’em to grab a friend – you never know what lifelong bonds may develop!

Registrations are currently being taken at First Security Bank at 670 S 19th Ave. Registration fee is $2 through August 1st, $4 on August 2nd. No race day registration.

As for Leigh and Kelly, we hope they are able to someday share pictures of their own children participating together in this fun community event!

Thank you to Leigh and Kelly (and Kelly’s mom, Gala) for sharing these great photos.

Autumn Fiske Wins 2013 Sweet Pea Poster Contest

May 22, 2013 by Sweet Pea Festival

With nearly fifty posters in the running, the coveted first place prize for the annual Sweet Pea Poster Contest had stiff competition. From digital art to pencil drawings and paintings to multi-media works of art, the contest featured an array of art from as far away as Florida and as near as just down the street from our office. A jury of four narrowed the entries down to seven that were then presented to the Sweet Pea Board of Directors for a final decision. After three rounds of voting (to determine third, second, and then first place) Autumn Fiske’s classic design was declared the winner.Autumn Fiske_poster artist_2013

Autumn Fiske is a thirty-year old Ryegate, Montana native who first attended the Sweet Pea Festival as an MSU student. A classmate invited Autumn to go hear some live music at the Festival. When Autumn strolled into the Festival she found plenty of music…and so much more! She was delighted by the art…the food….the myriad of vendors…the wide array of live performances…the overall community ‘vibe’…“The whole [festival] atmosphere was so casual and relaxing, but exciting and vibrant – all at the same time, “ the artist remembers.

It’s been a few years since Autumn enjoyed the Sweet Pea Festival as she now resides in Chinook, MT (five hours away near Havre), but she’s excited to return for the 2013 Sweet Pea Festival this August. Autumn also applied for the poster contest in 2012 but second time’s a charm for this Montanan who is taking home the blue ribbon and the $1,000 cash prize this year!

2013 Poster_blogAutumn enjoys art immensely and views it as a great connector of people. “Everyone is attracted to beauty, and I love the universal element of art,” she explains. Predominantly, she works with acrylic paint, but she also works with pencil and watercolors. Often, Autumn paints portraits. That said she really enjoyed branching out and creating art for the Sweet Pea Festival. In regards to her winning poster design, Autumn states that she was very drawn to the color palette she selected. The vibrant green she used as her background color showcases the lush, well-watered environment where Sweet Pea plants thrive. She likes the bold way this green color off-sets the sweet peas she painted.

Congratulations to Autumn Fiske on her winning design! Our panel of expert judges and the Sweet Pea Board agree: she has beautifully captured the spirit of the Sweet Pea Festival.

2nd Place: Chelsey Croskey

3rd Place: Ian Schumacher

Honorable Mention: Daniel Taylor

Meet this Year’s T-shirt Artists

May 10, 2013 by Sweet Pea Festival

Children’s T-shirt Art Winner

Liul

We are proud to announce that Liul Koroiyale, a second grader at Longfellow Elementary, is the winner of the 2013 Sweet Pea Children’s T-Shirt Art Contest. His winning design features sweet pea flowers rising from a top hat surrounded by stars. While the flowers inspired him to create the design, he said that he added the hat to make it more magical. Liul enjoys art and drawing, especially drawing cars. When not creating winning t-shirt designs (which his mother notes will make great Christmas presents), Liul likes playing outside with his brothers, riding his bike, and sledding in the winter. Liul arrived to Bozeman from Ethiopia last August, experienced his first snow this past winter (which he thought was pretty cool), and is excited for his first Sweet Pea Festival this year. He’s not sure what he’s going to do with his $100 winnings, but, grinning happily, he said “it feels good”.

Adult T-shirt Art Winner

Brandee_Brock

We are also excited to report that Brandee Brock is the 2013 Sweet Pea Adult T-Shirt Art Contest winner. Brandee’s winning design is a single color, circular print surrounded by sweet pea flowers and contains geometric outlining around various fonts. Brandee, a Graphic Design major at MSU, has a screen printing background and understands the challenges of printing t-shirts. Her goal was to create a label or badge for Sweet Pea that was simplistic, clean, and evoked a vintage feeling. Therefore, she wanted to keep her design uni-color for maximum versatility and create something that would translate well to fabric. Born and raised in Bozeman, Brandee currently lives in Alabama where her fiancé is attending Blackhawk helicopter training. She plans to return to Montana later this summer – hopefully in time to attend the Sweet Pea Festival and see her design on all the shirts! Her favorite parts of the Festival are the atmosphere and getting to see everyone, which makes a lot of sense since Sweet Pea has been a huge part of her family and upbringing. In fact, she’s only missed two or three Festivals since she was born. Her grandmother was an original art vendor; her grandfather has the entire collection of Festival buttons; her mother grows sweet peas every year, and her father has entered several winning parade floats.   We’re so glad that Brandee’s winning design will become a part of Sweet Pea history, too!
